Estrogens in coastal waters. The sewage source.

چکیده
Gynecologic case report 117 The vast majority of vaginal fungal infections are caused by Candida species, especially Candida albicans1,2. Recently, attention has focused on an unconfirmed increase in vaginal infections caused by C. glabrata3. Most microbiological investigations of large numbers of women with fungal vaginitis have reported infrequent symptomatic vaginitis caused by unusual species of Candida including C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C. krusei1,3. Rarely, vaginitis caused by Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been reported4. Although the Zygomycetes class of microorganisms are recognized as major pathogens in immunocompromised hosts, no mention in the literature has been made of vaginitis caused by these opportunistic pathogens5.

A significant net sink for CO2 in Tokyo Bay
Most estuaries and inland waters are significant source for atmospheric CO2 because of input of terrestrial inorganic carbon and mineralization of terrestrially supplied organic carbon. In contrast to most coastal waters, some estuaries with small freshwater discharge are weak source or sometimes sink for CO2. Extensive surveys of pCO2 in Tokyo Bay showed that the overall bay acts as a strong n...
متن کاملMeasurements of Health Risks Based on Fingerprinting Microbial Populations in Sewage, Coastal Waters, and Streams in Hawai‘i
Sewage contamination of our ground and surface waters is a major public health concern. Current indicator bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and enterococci, can naturalize in subtropical and tropical environments, ergo better indicator organisms are needed. Furthermore, current indicator bacteria do not discriminate between contamination sources, and hence the application of microbial source t...
متن کاملEstrogens from sewage in coastal marine environments.
Estrogens are ancient molecules that act as hormones in vertebrates and are biologically active in diverse animal phyla. Sewage contains natural and synthetic estrogens that are detectable in streams, rivers, and lakes. There are no studies reporting the distribution of steroidal estrogens in marine environments. We measured estrogens in sewage, injection-well water, and coastal tropical and of...
متن کاملINDICATIVE, PATHOGENIC, AND MARINE BACTERIA IN THE SEA Studies of the occurrence and survival of sewage-origin bacteria in coastal waters and sediments
Studies of the occurrence and survival of sewage-origin bacteria in coastal waters and sediments continued this year at the marine microbiology laboratory at California State University at Long Beach. The goal of these studies has been to determine what relationships, if any, exist between the routinely sampled indicator bacteria (e.g., coliforms, fecal streptococci) and pathogenic bacteria (e....
متن کاملHorizontal and vertical distribution of estrogenic activities in sediments and waters from Tokyo Bay, Japan.
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals with estrogenic activity (e.g., alkylphenols) have been detected in coastal Japan. We aimed to determine estrogenic activity in extracts of river water, seawater, sediments, and sediment cores from Tokyo Bay by in vitro gene expression assay. Fifty-one of 57 extracts had some estrogenic activity. E2 equivalents (ng E2 equivalents per gram dry weight or per liter a...
